Design & Technology at The Haven

Design and Technology (DT) at The Haven is a hands-on, creative subject that encourages children to explore, invent, and problem-solve. Through engaging projects, pupils learn to design, make, and evaluate products that have real-world relevance and purpose.

Our curriculum is built around six key areas: structures, mechanisms, textiles, cooking and nutrition, electrical systems, and the digital world. These areas are revisited throughout a child’s time at The Haven, allowing them to build on prior learning and develop increasingly sophisticated skills.

DT is taught across three terms each year and is carefully balanced with Art. Lessons are inclusive and differentiated, ensuring all children can access the learning and be challenged appropriately. From building boats in Reception to designing wearable technology and programming navigation tools in Key Stage 2, children are encouraged to think critically, work collaboratively, and reflect on their progress.

Cooking and nutrition are given particular emphasis, helping pupils understand healthy eating and food preparation in fun and practical ways. DT also links closely with other subjects such as Science, Computing, History, and PSHE, enriching the wider curriculum.

We regularly review the impact of our DT curriculum through pupil voice, assessment, and subject leader monitoring, ensuring that every child develops the confidence, creativity, and technical expertise to thrive in an ever-changing world.
