Our Geography Curriculum at The Haven
At The Haven, our Geography curriculum is firmly rooted in the National Curriculum for England. It is designed to develop pupils’ knowledge of the world, deepen their understanding of diverse places, people, resources, and natural and human environments, and foster a growing awareness of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.
From the Early Years Foundation Stage through to Year 6, children build a strong foundation in locational and place knowledge, human and physical geography, and geographical skills and fieldwork. Our curriculum follows a spiral structure, ensuring that key concepts are revisited and developed with increasing complexity as pupils progress through the school.
Children are taught to think like geographers—asking questions, using maps and digital tools, collecting and analysing data, and drawing conclusions about the world around them. Enquiry-based learning is at the heart of our approach, with topics such as “What is it like to live in Shanghai?”, “Why are rainforests important to us?”, and “Would you like to live in a desert?” encouraging pupils to explore global issues and local environments.
Fieldwork is a key component of our curriculum. Whether mapping the school grounds in Key Stage 1 or conducting independent investigations in Year 6, pupils apply their learning in real-world contexts. Lessons are inclusive, differentiated, and designed to stretch and support all learners.
By the end of their time at The Haven, pupils will have developed a secure understanding of geographical concepts, a strong sense of place, and the skills to interpret and influence the world around them as informed, responsible citizens.
