Forest School at The Haven

At The Haven, Forest School is a valued part of our curriculum, offering children the chance to learn, explore, and grow in a peaceful, natural environment. Through hands-on experiences outdoors, children develop practical skills, build confidence, and deepen their connection to the world around them.

Why Forest School Matters

Forest School supports children’s wellbeing, creativity, and resilience. It provides:

A calming space that promotes mindfulness and reduces anxiety.

Opportunities to explore, play, and problem-solve in a sensory-rich setting.

A sense of belonging and teamwork through shared outdoor experiences.

A growing awareness of environmental care and responsibility.

How It Works

Reception pupils attend Forest School sessions weekly, all year round, helping them feel secure and confident as they begin their school journey.

Pupils in Years 1 to 6 take part in a termly block of Forest School sessions across the year, building on their skills and experiences as they progress.

Children learn about fire safety, tool use, seasonal changes, and wildlife, with each year group following a carefully planned progression. Activities include:

Shelter building and knot tying

Cooking over fire and understanding food safety

Using tools safely and creatively

Exploring habitats, life cycles, and natural materials

Sessions are led by a qualified Forest School teacher and supported by additional staff to ensure safety, inclusion, and small group learning.

What Children Gain

Forest School helps children:

Build resilience and independence

Develop teamwork and communication skills

Foster curiosity and a love of learning

Strengthen their understanding of the natural world

We regularly review our Forest School curriculum to ensure it meets the needs of our pupils. Pupil voice, staff feedback, and ongoing monitoring help us keep the experience fresh, inclusive, and impactful.
