Young Carers at The Haven
Young Carers at The Haven
At The Haven, we are committed to supporting the wellbeing of all pupils, including those who are Young Carers. We understand that some children take on responsibilities at home that can impact their emotional, social, and academic lives, and we are here to help.
What is a Young Carer?
A Young Carer is someone aged 18 or under who helps care for a family member due to:
A physical disability
A learning disability
A long-term illness or health condition
A mental health condition
Alcohol or substance misuse
What Might a Young Carer Do?
Young Carers may take on a wide range of responsibilities at home. These can include:
Helping with personal care such as washing, dressing, or feeding
Managing household tasks like cleaning, cooking, or shopping
Supporting with finances, such as paying bills or budgeting
Providing emotional support to a relative experiencing anxiety or depression
Administering medication or assisting with mobility
Some Young Carers may be the main carer, while others share responsibilities with parents, siblings, or extended family.
How We Support Young Carers at The Haven
We recognise the unique challenges Young Carers face and aim to provide a supportive and understanding environment. Our wellbeing provision includes:
A safe space to talk and be heard
Access to our Children’s Wellbeing Support Lead and ELSA
Opportunities to connect with peers in similar situations
Support with managing school life and responsibilities at home
Signposting to external services where needed
We also follow the DCAT Wellbeing Framework, which helps us ensure that all children—including Young Carers—receive consistent, compassionate support across our school community.
